Congratulations to Matthew Mitcham on being inducted into the NSW Hall of Champions at the NSW Champions of Sports Awards held on Monday evening 27 November at Rosehill Gardens.
Matthew Mitcham made Olympic history when he was awarded the highest single-dive score at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games. His final dive in the 10m platform earned four perfect 10 scores, achieving a total of 112.10. Matthew’s gold medal prevented China from claiming every diving gold medal at these Games. He also became the first Australian to win an Olympic diving gold medal since 1924.
Moving from trampolining gymnastics to diving in 2002, Matthew trained with NSW Institute of Sport Head Diving Coach Chava Sobrino from 2007.
At Australian Diving Championships between 2008 and 2011 Matthew won four gold medals in the 10m platform, three gold in the 1m springboard, and two gold in the 3m springboard. He won gold medals in the 10m platform at the 2008 USA FINA Diving Grand Prix and the 2010 World Cup in China. At the 2009 Rome World Championships he won bronze in the 1m springboard.
Matthew has competed at three Commonwealth Games, 2006, 2010 and 2014.
At the 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games he won silver medals in the 1m springboard, 10m platform and two in the synchronized 3 and 10 metre events with Ethan Warren. The 2014 Glasgow Games saw Matthew win gold in the 10m platform synchronised event with diving partner Grant Nel.
In 2012 Matthew competed at the London Olympic Games and was named Male Diver of the Year. An outstanding role model, Matthew has been a spokesperson for youth mental health, and in retirement turned to the performing arts. Matthew has been an inspiration to many Australians both in and out of the pool. Congratulations Matthew you are a true champion.
